We all know that vegetarianism is related to the practice of abstaining from eating any type of meat. Also, vegetarian diets keep increasing in popularity around the world and many people make this switch in their diet because of the potential health benefits. Yet, some vegetarians rely too heavily on processed foods, which may contain higher level of calories, sugar, fat and sodium, making their diet less healthy than a usual carnivorous diet. On the other hand, vegetarian eating pattern is also associated with lower levels of obesity, diabetes, cancer and reduced chances of heart disease, and higher levels of fiber, potassium and vitamin C.
The most common reason to become vegetarian is ethical. More people tend to give up on eating meat due to animal abuse or environmental issues. But, a lot of people also become vegetarian in order to improve their health or lose weight. Yes, that’s right, vegetarian diets can be a good path to lose weight, but it depends on a few factors. Giving up on meat does not mean you will immediately lose weight. However, vegetarian diets tend to contain lower levels of calories than carnivorous diets. A research study showed that, on average, a typical vegetarian diet has 500 fewer calories than a typical meat-eating diet, which also happens because vegetarians tend to eat less than carnivorous people. The best option to improve your health and lose weight is eating legumes, vegetables and whole grains. Also, nowadays many grocery stores have vegetarian friendly meals that are easy to prepare, even though they are not always the healthiest options.
