- ½ cup plus 3 Tbsp sugar
- 6 Tbsp four
- 6 egg yolks, beaten
- 1 7/8 cups whole milk
- 3 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups whipping cream
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 angelfood or pound cake
- 3 qt mixed berries
Instructions: Preparing the Custard: In a heavy saucepan, mix together sugar and flour. Stir in milk and beaten egg yolks. Cook and stir on medium until mixture thickens and begins to bubble, but DO NOT boil. Remove from heat immediately. Add vanilla extract and stir in thoroughly, then cool for 30 min.
Preparing the Whipped Cream: In food processor, beat whipping cream and sugar until it forms firm peaks. (Can add any other flavorings you’d like at this time as well.)
Assembling the Trifle: In a trifle bowl or clear souffle serving bowl, arrange cubed cake along bottom edges of bowl and line the bottom. Sprinkle with fresh fruit and spoon a layer of custard on top, followed by a layer of whipped cream. Continue to stack bowl.
Continue to layer cake, fruit, custard and whipped cream until the container is full near the top. Once you reach the very top layer with last layer being whipped cream. Chill in refrigerator for 4-5 hrs. Garnish with berries and enjoy the deliciousness!!!
*You can add another layer of flavor to this by sprinkling the cake on each layer with sherry or rum or many of the wonderful flavorings available in the store.
